An oversize volume with parchment covers comprised of culinary and household recipes spanning the years from 1840-1892. Most of the recipes are between the years 1844 and 1875. Inscribed on the inside back cover: J. [M.] Pemberton's book, Gibraltar, Leeds, 1844. The inside front cover and first three unnumbered pages comprise a table of contents listing the recipe and page number. |List of French and other foreign words ...| is on the next three pages. Numbered pages 1-56 comprise the recipes listed in the table of contents followed by eight leaves. The culinary recipes written in the volume are for breads, cakes, jellies, meat dishes, picklings, puddings, rice dishes, and wines. There are several cakes including ground rice, spice, and Wakefield gingerbread. Puddings include carrot, castle, scalded, and Sir Martin's. A recipe for Parkin, a Yorkshire gingerbread cake associated with Leeds. Several household recipes include cleaners, blacking, pastes, and polishes. A few medicinal and toiletry recipes include remedies for chapped hands, coughs, and inflamed eyes and mixtures for hair. A poem is written on the last leaf of the volume. Many recipes are dated with attributions such as Jane Hammond, Mrs. J. Pemberton, the Family herald, the London journal, and the Young ladies journal. Six small leaves of recipes are laid in the volume. A letter dated April 14, 1892 from M. Wilkinson to Mrs. Rhodes with a recipe for whooping cough is laid in the volume. The spine of the volume is cracked and has loose covers and leaves.
